As part of the “war on drugs” and in reaction to an increase in
school violence, many schools across the nation now conduct
targeted searches of student lockers and backpacks. Although the
Supreme Court has ruled that public school officials have the right
to search students’ persons and property when they have
reasonable cause to suspect weapons or drugs, many people feel
this is a gross violation of students’ right to privacy. Others feel
that since school officials are responsible for the well-being of
students while they are in the building, they have the right to
search for drugs or weapons at any time. How do you feel about
this issue? State your position and explain your reasons with
specific examples.
I think since a Locker is Public school Property Then a school should have the right to Very Often Check them if They want. But I Also think that a school Shouldn't have a right To check a Students' Backpack. That's a Students' Personal Object, and if they feel the Need to not Let anyone go through THEIR backpack then I Agree with Them. No one should HAVE to let someone Search their backpack. But I Also think that Maybe it's a Little bit Ok? Only if it's a Regular thing for students' Bringing Drugs or Weapons. Because then it'
ReplyDeletes a Safey Hazard. But just Not out of No where!
Are you stating that it is OK to violate student's privacy like going through their backpack if it results in safety for the student?
DeleteYes because it's there school and they have the right they want what's best for the school and they don't want nobody be in harm
ReplyDeleteWho does the school belong to? The students or teachers? What is best for the school?
Deleteyes ........ the student needs to follow rules like everyone else .
ReplyDeleteI think that the school does have the right to search the students locker because it is school property. I also think that the school does not have the right to search the students backpack because the school does not own the bag the student does, maybe if the student has had trouble in the pass like that then the school should have the right to search the students backpack, but the school shouldn't put all the other students in the middle of someone else's stupidness.
ReplyDeleteHere's the thing, either they check every students back packs/lockers; or everyone cry's and whines about a big catastrophic thing happens when no one had a clue that the Asian nerd carried an Ozzy in his back pack. So yes, I do think it's okay. And if someone is bringing weed/alcohol/cigarettes to school, and scared of getting caught, then just don't bring it to school. Just the next time a school get's shot up don't complain because you voted for it being wrong to go threw someones back pack.
ReplyDeleteI think that the school does have the right to search the students locker because it is school property. I also think that the school has every right to search the students backpack because it is the schools responsibility to make sure all students are in a safe learning environment, and that cannot happen in the presence of drugs and/or weapons. The school should be thinking of the students safety before anything else and if a teacher or authority figure believes that there is a reason a bag or locker should be searched, the bag/locker/personal item has every right to be searched. I think it is worth the embarrassment of being searched to potentially stop something harmful from happening to a student.
